Garden Grove Brake Repair

One of your vehicles mot important elements besides your engine are your brakes. The engine makes you move and your brakes make you stop. Unfortunately, that’s all most Garden Grove drivers really consider when thinking about their brakes, until they stop working. One of the most common failures in your brake system are the brake pads. In most all newer vehicles, the front wheels have a braking apparatus that depend on rotors: large steel discs behind each wheel. Above each rotor is a clamp-like device called the caliper. When you engage the brake pedal, your calipers start to close, squeezing the rotors from both sides. This action creates friction, which slows your vehicle until they come to a full stop.

Brake pads, per the name are simply pads that are mounted inside the calipers to make contact with the rotors during the previously mentioned process. However, brake pads don’t last forever. The stopping process will eventfully wear them down. Also, depending on your driving habits and freeway versus city can also take a toll on them, making them wear out even quicker. Tips for recognizing possible brake problems:

Screeching noises
Most brake pads are built with “wear indicators.” Wear indicators are small metal tabs located near the top of typical brake pads. When the brake pad wears down an unsafe level, the indicator will scrape against the rotor. This creates a distinctive grating noise which warns drivers that the brake pads are in immediate need of service. If you ignore this to long the pads can completely wear our forcing your vehicle to stop with metal grinding on metal that will destroy your rotors and lead to complete brake failure.

Clicking noises
Some cars, brake pads fit snugly into a special holding device. Other vehicles keep them steady with pins, clips or bolts. What happens next is a clicking sound that rings out whenever the brake pedal is pushed or released.

Stopping takes longer than it used to
This is called “brake fade.” This is usually a result of applying the brakes over a vast distance without bringing the car to a full stop. Sometime this can be a bad driving habit know as ridding the brake, some people are overly cautious which can wear on your brakes. This can also happen while driving down a mountainside or over winding roads. However, if you live in an area will lots of hills you ridding the brakes may not be avoidable—but, over time it will take a toll on your braking system.

Your car pulls to one side when braking
Brake pads don’t always wear out at the same rate. Depending on your daily Long Beach commute, following the same turns day after day can result in uneven wear. But if a brake pad gets overheated, the resin may not be distributed uniformly. This is called this issue “glazing” and it can cause brake pedals to vibrate.

Your vehicle’s suspension isn’t something most people think about when it’s working. When all of a sudden you may notice uneven wear on your tires or start to feel excessive play with your steering wheel. Or you just drove over a pothole on one of our local Garden Grove roads causing damage to your suspension. These are signs that you may have a suspension problem. Another sign to look for is the front of your vehicle slumps when braking or bottoms out when accelerating.

But what is the suspension? It’s part of your vehicles chassis, which includes the frame, the steering system and the wheels. The suspension system supports your vehicle’s weight, helps reduce the effect of shock forces and maintains proper wheel alignment. It’s critical for accurate steering, stopping and stability. Every time you hit a pothole, a bump, or object in the road, your suspension absorbs that impact and maintains control.

A flat tire seems to never happen when not in a rush to go some place. Sometimes you walk out to your vehicle to go to work and there’s a flat tire or your heading down the road to pick up the kids and notice you’re car pulling to one side and is a bit sluggish or worst case your driving down the 405 freeway and get a blow out. These are all terrible situations to be in, at Orozco’s Auto Service of Garden Grove, we know how inconvenient a flat tire can be. Tires can go flat for many reasons, including a puncture, a leaking valve stem, a bent rim or just old tires. If you experience a flat or low tire, bring your vehicle to a stop as soon as possible without jeopardizing your safety or the people around you and preferably in a safe place. If you’re stranded on the roadside, turn on your hazard lights and raise your hood if it’s a safe place to exit your vehicle. Once you are safely situated, you can change to your spare, try a tire sealer/inflator or call for a tow truck. Don’t try driving for even a very short distance on a deflated tire because it will damage the tire beyond repair and possibly your rim.

Unfortunately not all tires can be repaired even when they just have a nail in the tire and are told by a tire. Here are a few common reasons why some tires shouldn’t be repaired.

The Puncture Is In The None Repair Zone
In order to repair a tire the puncture needs to be about 20% away from both sides of the tire towards the treads. If your puncture is to close the sidewall and is repaired, this can compromise the structure of the tire making it unsafe to drive on. Tire shops need to keep customers safe, and they all follow an industry standard and will are not aloud to repair a puncture too close to either sidewall. Even if it’s close they won’t patch it to protect your safety and themselves from any liability.

You Drove To Far On A Deflated Tire
Today’s tires have an inner structure of the sidewall that isn’t designed to support your vehicle’s weight when not properly inflated. You can sometimes get away with driving on a flat for a short distance – meaning a few feet not down the street. Just drove 10 minutes on the flat will not only destroy the sidewall structure of your tire, but you may also need to get a new costly rim to go with a new tire.

Your Tire Has Other Issues
If you have any area of the tire too old or worn beyond the tread wear indicators, your tire is not repairable. If your tire is unevenly worn and any of the metal parts inside are visible your tire is not repairable. If you have a bubble, a tear, or a chunk of debris stuck into your tire, it is unrepairable. Even if that’s not the reason why your tire went flat. Basically, if your tire was not safe before the puncture, your tire shop won’t try to repair it.

You Have Run Flat Tires
Many shops will not and should not repair a run-flat tire that has had a puncture. Although run-flats are designed to get you to a shop or home when you have a puncture, they may not have been designed to then be repaired and continue in service after having been driven when deflated. As a regular practice we don’t normally recommend the runflat tires.

Many new car owners in Garden Grove are surprised when they’re told their new vehicle can only use Synthetic oil. Additionally, they discover this is around twice the cost of the standard oil they are used to using. So when did this new costly upgrade happen and is it really benefiting me and my vehicle?

For starters, since 2019 the majority of new vehicles (about 70%) recommend using synthetic oil or a synthetic blend oil for their engines. We’ll get into synthetic blends in another article, for now lets stick with synthetic oil. Synthetic oil is generally a better choice for performance. This is based on the fact that synthetic oil protects your engine due to lower levels of friction. Which tends to protect your engine better at low and high tempters. Additionally, synthetic oils don’t break down as quickly as a standard oil meaning you can go further distances in between oil changes that can help save money in the long run.

What is synthetic oil? Synthetic oil is artificially made from chemical compounds by breaking down and then rebuilding petroleum molecules. The base material, however, is still overwhelmingly crude oil that is distilled and then modified physically and chemically. There are multiple types of synthetics with distinctly different properties and applications.

Here are a few of the benefits of using synthetic oil:

• Synthetics have a naturally higher viscosity index. Meaning, the viscosity changes less as temperature changes during normal engine startup and operating conditions as a result of being a more stable compound than standard oil.
• At extremely low temperatures, it is possible for mineral oils to become so thick (high viscosity) that the oil is non-pumpable making it unable to circulate effectively within the engine.
• Synthetic engine oils are generally less volatile than standard oils. This means there is less loss of the oil to the engine’s exhaust stream causing air pollution. This could also mean less need for adding oil between oil changes.
• Synthetic oil has a longer lifespan than conventional oil. The recommended change interval for synthetic oil is around every 5,000 to 7,000 miles or 6 to 8 months, with some brands lasting much longer (15,000 to 25,000).
• Get a longer engine life. Most Garden Grove drivers have never owned a vehicle with more than 200,000 miles on the engine, but with so many new vehicles using synthetic oils we will see more drivers every year achieving this goal.

In conclusion, for many vehicles, synthetic oils may be a better choice for overall engine operation and performance. Unless the biggest factor affecting your selection of lubrication is only the overall cost. But if you really want the best possible protection.
