Many call it the one of the most misunderstood indicators on your dashboard. But, not to worry this can mean a variety of issues, from a loose gas cap, a sign that your car isn’t getting the best fuel economy, emitting higher levels of pollutants or worst case scenario, a serious issues with your engine.

Although, it does mean if your in the area you should contact Orozco’s Auto Service and have it checked out at your soonest opportunity. Ignoring any warning from your vehicle may end up damaging some expensive components.

If your check-engine light comes on, here are some tips on what you can do:

Check your dashboard gauges and lights for indications of low oil pressure or overheating. These conditions mean you should pull over and shut off the engine as soon as you can find a safe place to do so. On some vehicle’s, a yellow “check engine” means investigate the problem, while a red “check engine” can mean stop as soon as it’s safe to pull over.

One of the first and most simple first steps is try tightening your gas cap. Quite often this solves the problem. Keep in mind that it may take several trips before the light resets. If the light continues to stay on feel free to visit Orozco’s Auto Service of Garden Grove and we can reset it for you. Newer vehicle may have a separate indicator that warns of a loose gas cap before the condition sets off the “check engine” light.

What is The “Check Engine” Light

The “check engine” light is part of your vehicle’s onboard diagnostics AKA the (OBD) system. Since the 1980s, computers increasingly have controlled and monitored your vehicle performance. Such as regulating variables as engine speed (RPM), ignition timing, fuel mixture and in some cars, the computer also tells automatic transmissions when to shift.

When it finds a problem in the electronic-control system that it can’t correct, the computer turns on a yellow warning indicator that’s labeled “check engine,” “service engine soon” or “check powertrain.” Or the light may be nothing more than a picture of an engine, known as the International :Check Engine” Symbol. In addition to turning on the light, the computer stores a “trouble code” in its memory to identifies the source of the problem. This may be a malfunctioning sensor or a misfiring engine. If you bring your vehicle in to Orozco’s Auto Service we can read the code with an electronic scan tool or our diagnostic computer.
